The Shawshank Redemption is the rare film that genuinely earns its reputation. It is about hope in the face of despair, friendship in the most unlikely places, and the indomitable human spirit. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman have a chemistry that feels completely natural. The ending is one of the most satisfying in cinema history.

Stephen King's source novella is excellent but Frank Darabont's adaptation surpasses it. This is a film that improves with every viewing — details you miss the first time become meaningful on the second. The narration by Morgan Freeman is some of the finest voice work in American cinema.
